Staghunting on Exmoor 1940 to 1998 is the first comprehensive account describing hunting with the Devon & Somerset Staghounds during and since the Second World War. It gives an informed account of the technique ofstag-hunting before the ban imposed by the Hunting Act 2004, and emphasises the vital part played by the Hunt in the management of a thriving and healthy herd of wild red deer on the moor. There are vignettes of the leading characters of the Hunt - Masters, Huntsmen, Harbourers and Secretaries - as well as descriptions of some of the outstanding hunts over a period of nearly sixty years. The book also deals with the relations between the Hunt and the National Trust, culminating in the ban on stag-hunting in 1997 contrary to the express wishes of the donor of the land Sir Richard Acland, as well as the long political battle which led to the Hunting Act.
